Show the book spines: make one low shelf easy to read

2 min read

A bookshelf can contain plenty of good books and still be difficult to use. Books behind other books disappear from view, and a tightly packed row makes retrieval awkward. Choose one low shelf holding books the child can handle easily. This job makes that row readable without deciding which books the family should keep.

Preserve a familiar order

Look at the shelf before removing anything. If a series is in number order, keep that group together. If picture books have an agreed area and reference books another, use the same arrangement. The child does not have to invent a new system for the whole bookcase.

Take out a few books at a time and put them on a clean surface. Return them with their spines facing the room and their bottom edges supported by the shelf. Avoid pulling a book by a loose part of its cover. Put a damaged book aside for an adult.

Give small books a visible space

Do not hide small books behind tall ones simply to create an even height at the front. Keep small books together in their own section of the row. A book without clear spine text can stay in a short group the child recognises, or lie in its agreed place with the cover visible.

Use only the support already assigned to the shelf. If the books fall when one is removed, ask an adult to help with a suitable arrangement. Avoid building an improvised support from unrelated possessions.

Elias finds three small animal books behind a large atlas. He puts the small books together beside his space-book series. An adult returns the atlas to its usual location. Elias can now read all the visible spines and retrieve the animal book he wants.

Try one book from the middle

Remove a book that is not at the end. Its neighbours should stay standing and leave a visible gap for its return. If the row is too tight, hand the surplus books together to an adult for another location.

Finished means visible books, preserved order and one successful removal and return. “Make the low bookshelf readable” in Kroni is a more precise job than tidying every book.
